The "white leaved trees" & "pictures of thoughts" of Armando Salas Portugal
Last monday evening I had the pleasure to get a glimpse on the latest book by the Armando Salas Portugal Foundation. We were also shown the last 5 original prints of Salas Portugals psychedelic contribution of the late 60ies "Foto del pensamiento".
As usual when I drop by my neighbour and friend Armando S.P. Jr., who organizes his fathers legacy with big dedication, I walk away impressed and with a severe nostalgic feel about the long gone Mexico of adventures and postrevolutionary splendor. This visit I was especially intrigued by the magical look of the archaeological sites A.S.P. photographed between the late 1930 and the mid-1950. Asking about the white leaves and dark skies, I got to know that he experimented a lot with Infrared film and filters; processes I knew about, but I never go to see on this quality levels.
The following HD Video is an exercise based on the particular feel A.S.P. triggers watching and remembering his "photographs of thoughts" and his particular interpretation of archeological sites. There is no doubt that "the moment" -quoted so often watching photographies- looses importance. His work rather consist of a whole visual reconstruction and reinterpretation of a place as such.
By digitally color correcting my HD footage of a tree playfuly touched by wind I explore similar grounds -that strange feeling of not really having been there, and if so it surely felt different.
